Scruffy Spirituality

According to Merriam-Webster, scruffy means “Informal: not neat, clean, or orderly. “ When I talk about scruffy spirituality, I’m referring to an everyday spirituality, experienced in ordinary living - washing the dishes, driving to work, talking to your family and friends, etc.

Your spirituality might be grounded in an organized faith tradition, or it might not. Spirituality is available to anyone who is ready practice opening their hearts and minds to the divine presence in every ordinary day.

Spiritual Direction is time out of time to rediscover and rekindle the divine spark within you, create meaning and purpose, and point you toward the sacred in every ordinary day.

I am a religious agnostic from a Unitarian Universalist faith tradition. I believe the holy resides in the ordinary. I find spiritual connection in nature, community, music, poetry, art, and science among other things.

My spiritual practices include walking, writing, lectio divina, and prayer.

A few relevant facts about me

  • I am a certified Spiritual Director, through the Meadville Lombard Theological School LIGHT program.

  • I have been a Unitarian Universalist for 26 years.

  • I serve as the Director of Lifespan Religious Exploration at the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara in California.

  • I have an MA in clinical psychology.

  • I have a terrific husband, two young adult children, and two young adult step children.
